Onto the flood light pole

The first time was already an experience that you don’t really have to repeat with camera equipment on your belly. Of course, it was bound to happen…

Flood light pole – and action!

Actually, Steffen swore already after the first time to never climb on a flood light pole at Frankenstadion again. 60 metres in height, climbing a ladder in a confined space (but with a photo backpack on the chest) was real torture already back then.

Hitradio N1 is currently looking for the bravest Franconian. One of the five candidates will win a Toyota Aygo from Frankengarage.

Candidate Mesut was the first participant and had to clean a spotlight on a flood light pole in the stadium. That would have been a bit boring without capturing him doing so. Thus, Steffen – and who would have thought – had to climb the pole once again.

No child’s play – not even for trained staff. To those with claustrophobia or fear of heights, a fully unthinkable undertaking. Ascending with camera equipment (even though reduced to the bare necessities) is really crazy (and posed several challenges this time).

Having arrived at 60 metres of height, you are standing on metal grating and can beautifully look down on the happenings below… if you manage to open the hatch.

As Steffen was the first to climb the pole, two attempts were required, as opening the hatch was impossible with a photo backpack on his chest. So, back down to the next safety grating, deposit the backpack, open the hatch, climb down again, get the backpack, climb up and exit onto the metal grating, which is just as overwhelming the second time.

Having arrived up there, the view of Nuremberg is divine – even with cold temperatures of -2° Celsius and a strong wind blowing. The effort to get there was forgotten (for the time being).

Candidate Mesut came to the top several minutes later, dutifully and confidently cleaned the spotlight while the cameraman and Steffen were busy taking photos. After a short breather they climbed down again realising that the descent was almost wilder than the ascent.

Hitradio N1 is very happy about the photos. Mesut hopefully has a nice souvenir and pictures of his top performance – an experience otherwise reserved to few select people.

We are game for almost anything and always try to deliver the photographs to our clients that they desire. And yet, we would be glad if we could drop the flood light pole issue ;-)
